What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Our stage name is JSON.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Our name is a combination of “Jcamp” and “Son One.”
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
We are children of the golden era of hip hop. Our musical journey dates back to 1998 when we met in college. Our music is inspired by artists of the late ’80s and ’90s.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
Our song “Killjoy” was actually recorded right when COVID hit. Jcamp had to purchase a mic to record the song. We didn’t realize how special the song would be and how much it would resonate with us as part of this journey. The song became the birth of JSON and our album Campfires on a Sonday.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
We want people to appreciate the art. We do this for the love of creativity, and we have the utmost respect for the genre. Hip hop is how we met, so to be able to create music and have fun doing it is what makes it special. Our chemistry isn’t fabricated, and hip hop is our connective tissue. You can hear it in the bar work, and we take pride in paying homage to the art and dedicating our content to people who love bars.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Recording music 860 miles apart is not easy. We make it sound easy, but artists thrive when they can create in a studio setting together. We only had two opportunities on this project to do that. Three of the 13 songs were created while we were in the same studio; the rest were created virtually.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
We would love to collaborate with Wu-Tang Clan and the Boot Camp Clik. We grew up idolizing their style of music and the art they created. Wu-Tang is the greatest hip hop collective ever. They all made each other better, and their love for hip hop is unquestionable. You want to work with people who will bring the best out of your creativity.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
We know we have a formula to be successful. We know we have the talent to be successful. For us, it’s about consistency and drive. We see this situation taking off because we don’t take it for granted. We have families, and we’re conditioned to push through adversity as parents, so we are built to survive the pitfalls of music. We see JSON becoming a recognized name in adult contemporary hip hop. We feel 2025 is our breakthrough year.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
The next big step is building JSON as a brand. We want to instill our art in the industry and give other artists like ourselves hope that they can carve their own path through hard work and consistency.
Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
You can hear us on all streaming platforms. Our album Campfires on a Sonday is available for streaming:
