What’s your stage name and where are you from?

My name is Trust Tate and I’m from Jersey City, New Jersey.

What’s the story behind your stage name?

Trust Tate is my legal and I chose to use it for my stage name, because I was told that it sounds like a movie star or artist’s name.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

I was rapping in my dorm room at Rutgers University, uploading solely to Soundcloud. I got signed to Touch of Grace Music Group, an Independent Record Label and performed and recorded in some of the best venues and studios on the east coast. I learned how to audio engineer and produce so i can sufficiently record my own music.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

I enjoyed making “Help Myself”, one of the latest tracks on my home studio album “Don’t Look Down.” I was recording the chorus of the song, which entails a bit of yelling and I live in an apartment building. My neighbors started banging on the wall to the cadence of the beat, as a way of politely telling me to keep it down. It was pretty funny.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

I feel like in most of today’s rap music, violence runs rampant. I get that violence is a part of life, but glorifying it has become the norm in Hip-Hop. I want to provide a bit of balance to the music scene. I am an imperfect being, still trying to figure out love, lust, family life, and career goals and I want to be vulnerable with the world. I am a college graduate, a military member, and musician. I want to show people they can be a regular hardworking person and make music.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

I recorded this album at my home studio and I’m still learning audio engineering so my limited knowledge gets in the way. I have to go online to troubleshoot specific situations I come across from time to time as I progress in my engineering journey. More specifically, I kept running into the issue of my vocals being hidden behind the beats, so I studied some mixing techniques to adjust the vocal levels, leaving them sitting just right in the mix.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

I would love to collaborate with Kid Cudi. I feel like he just transcends genre and expression, which would push me further in my own musical journey. I saw him live at Governor’s Ball NYC and it left a mark on me.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

I see myself still recording music, figuring out how to better market myself, and learning more about audio engineering.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

I am getting my Master’s in Business Administration with the goal of opening a multi-media agency to extend my expertise in photo/video/audio studio to creatives and businesses.

Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
