What’s your stage name and where are you from?
OVL Big Feddy / Raleigh, NC
What’s the story behind your stage name?
The OVL in my name stands for Overweight Lover. The reason I go by OVL is obviously a reference to my size, but also a reference to my mentality and a representation of a positive self image. Overweight Lover is also paying homage to legendary musician Heavy D whom I was heavily influenced by.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
I look at my musical journey like something I literally grew up with. I fell in love with poetry and melody at a very young. I’ve spent majority of my life studying, understanding, and nurturing the language we call music.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
“Miss My Dawgs” is memorial for a close friend, and I experienced a range of emotions throughout the recording process. I literally remember times busting out laughing with tears in my eyes while recording this song.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
It probably sounds cliche but I really want to convey hope in my music. I feel like we all suffer from the human condition and music is the soundtrack that helps ease the pain.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
I lost a really close friend and group member before recording my latest album “Shop Don’t Close”. So every recording session was almost like therapy. I experienced the different stages of grief, but some how the reflection had a comforting quality.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I would really love to work with Fantasia. We are both from North Carolina and I think she is super talented.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
Hopefully, all over the world.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
I’m performing at SXSW this year so that’s kind of a bucket list moment.
Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
My music is available for streaming on all major DSP’s. My music videos are available on the “MightyMightyEnt.” YouTube channel. I also have a 50 minute documentary called “Larger Than Life” on my website mightymightyent.com.
