Artist Spotlight: Reubin X

What’s your stage name and where are you from?

My stage name is Reubin X.

What’s the story behind your stage name?

Malcolm X was a big inspiration for my stage name as I looked up to him in my early years. “X,” meaning unknown, was used to represent the African name that was taken from us during slavery. I later adapted this same notion as I myself didn’t like the idea of carrying a surname that didn’t represent me or my past.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

It’s been “slow” and “tough” at times, but ultimately, it’s been “fun.”

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

I worked on it while I was in Japan at my uncle’s studio. It was cool to not only be in a different headspace but also a different environment. It was nice to mix and record while looking over a river in Tokyo, watching the boats come in and out.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

All of my songs are political or portray a deep, meaningful topic. For me, it’s important to get those topics off my chest, but I also strongly feel like my music can help benefit and educate people, which is why I do it. I feel like there isn’t enough politics in music these days, or people worry it doesn’t sell or resonate with others anymore. In reality, I believe it’s what many people need to hear most, especially in the times we are living in. Today, it feels like people only focus on politics when it’s convenient or as a cash grab for attention, but for me, this is real. What I do and say is genuine, and I won’t ever stop being X.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

My biggest weakness is my confidence and overthinking. I overthink a lot, which leads me to over-mix or under-mix songs. I don’t believe in myself enough, and that causes me to hold onto work for far too long.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

This is a tricky question, but honestly, it’s either Thom Yorke or Kate Bush. Most people think it would be some rapper, hahaha. I listen to a lot of music outside of hip-hop; I like quirky and different melodies, and I find them inspiring.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

I hope my music is progressing, but I also hope that I’m growing and learning too.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

My big plans are to expand Reubin X, not only as an artist but to push X/KMOKTM as a brand. I want to use my platform for activism, spread awareness, and do more charity work. That’s my end goal as an artist. X is bigger than me; X is for the people.

Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?

All of my music is available on all streaming platforms!

What is the best way to contact you if fans want to give feedback or if other artists/producers want to collaborate?

Instagram, TikTok, or in person at one of my shows. I love talking to people about my music or music in general.
