What’s the story behind your stage name?

A childhood nickname that stuck from the friends that I grew up with. When I began emceeing, they would say Syd is about to Mac, before I knew it I was known as Sydmac, and it stuck. I appreciate my friends for it.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

The drive to know what’s on the other side.
Is the reason we strive.
If we persist in this ride, we will see what was already ours.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

Fear, for most of my life I haven’t experienced it in the way that I have when putting together this latest record. The theme of “the truth shall set you free” became fearful when bringing to light my transgressions, the hand I’ve played in hurting others, lies and misunderstands. I was faced with the challenge that for me to get to the better side of me, perhaps I have to look myself in the mirror.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

Truth can be a hard thing to decipher, I remember wanting to be the news to my listener, then I wanted to tell stories, mostly I wanted to create music in a philosophical way, to reflect. Reflect Rap. Mostly the listener was myself, so in a lot of my music I speaking to another me, past me, future me, the you in me.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

I loved every challenge that I’ve faced when producing my own music. I’ve heard other artist talk about this so I know it’s not unique to me, but for a long time I had no idea about EQ or understanding how I got certain sounds. Do I would work on a song record it and run to my car, and listen and compare to understand imaging or panning, doubling, vocal stuff. This took a lot of time but I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot, and I still don’t know what I’m doing lol I love music tho.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Definitely Kanye, but anyone really. I believe everyone is their own planet and you can learn something from everyone one. If I had to choose tho, I’d say Ye, because I really liked to be pushed, challenged to do something beyond myself, true artist can see beyond the horizons and I think he could show me things.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

I’ve done a lot of small medium venues and showcases in brooklyn, I’d really love to take on a bigger venue and go out on the road and experience more of that. Collaborating with more musicians and expanding the music.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

Putting out this record and producing a playwright for it.

Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?

“Sydmac” is the artist name. I’ve been going to the Nuyorican poets cafe, recently they’ve got some content up on their YouTube channel.
