Artist Introduction

What’s your name and where are you from?

My name is Edward Dizon and I’m from Vallejo, California.

What’s the story behind your stage name?

Besides being a play on my actual name, Word means many things to me. First, in Hip-Hop, Word is used as yea, what, forreal, or as a term of agreement. Biblically, in the beginning was the Word, and I believe we are indeed at the start of a new era in Hip-Hop. Also Word refers to THE word, as in the word of God. Lastly, My Word is bond. I am a man that says if I’m going to do something, I will. Word in Arabic means a promise.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.

I started as a teenager just wanting to be in the game, wanting to be the best rapper ever. Then, I realized the subject matter I was speaking about was superficial and a facade. Now, I have a message that is screaming to be let out, and music is its best option.

Fan Engagement

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.

I was just excited to get it mastered and mixed. Of course, I wore a pair of wallabees to the studio when I recorded it. Writing it was fun. I had listened to Ghostface Killah at the beginning of Glaciers of Ice, talking bout all the fly colors he had planned out for the Wally’s. So I thought man, it’d be dope to make a song that was an ode to the Clark’s Wallabee.

What message do you want to convey through your music?

To bring knowledge and power to the people. That we are stronger than we believe we are. That the power of the entire universe exists within us, and through knowledge of self and a proper foundation, we can build and grow ourselves, and by doing so we grow everything around us as well. As above, so below; as within, so without.

Behind the Music

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.

Studio time isn’t free. The cost of recording is what keeps me from providing constant material. I’m not a DIYer, I don’t have my own studio, I’m not an engineer or a producer. I’m a lyricist, a rapper, and an artist. The time it takes to gather extra pocket change for studio time is to right now, my greatest challenge that I am constantly having to face.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

Nas, off top. 1, he’s been my favorite rapper since forever. And 2, he’s a street poet. I’ve always respected and loved Nas’ catalog for that exact reason, his poetry. The way he finds introspection through consciousness and the way he tells stories, I think we’d come up with some pretty remarkable stuff.

Future Aspirations

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?

I see possible collaborations with other artists as well as public forums where important issues can be discussed openly so we can continue to build as a people and as a culture. I see music bringing me to the tables where changes are made.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?

To release my debut album, OMNI, coming soon this summer.
