Artist Spotlight: Young Truth

4

What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Young Truth.

What’s the story behind your stage name?
The name Truth stuck with me from when I was a kid. My mom used to say I needed to learn how to “tell a lie or two” because I was too honest. Later, I rapped for a childhood friend who is like family to me. After hearing the rap, he said, “You are the truth. I’m going to call you Truth.” It was divine because it reminded me of what my mom used to say. I added “Young” because Jay-Z, my favorite rapper, called himself Young Hov, so I called myself Young Truth.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
My musical journey has been a blessing. I’ve experienced a lot of highs and lows, which positioned me to do what I do today. I feel aligned with success in this industry.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I’m receiving a lot of DMs about how much “MKUU” reminds people of the golden era of rap. It feels good to know this form of rap is still being acknowledged. I’m very hands-on with my music, so it hits differently when I get love for it.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
The overall message is that we have the ability to shape life the way we want. We are all masters of our fate and carry our own unique frequency, so go out, live, and create. “Do your thing”—that’s what I’m an advocate for.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
I used to record music once a month because I didn’t have the budget to record as much as I wanted. I overcame this by building a home studio, and now I can record and release music anytime I want.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Conway the Machine. He has a great ear for music, and in his personal life, he’s overcome a lot, which is really inspiring to me. I’d also love to collaborate with Nas because he’s a legend who has worked with the best in music.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I see more tours, selling more merch, and building my fan base.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Building up my label, 3 Music Group, and growing my brand as an artist.

Yes.

Yes.
