Who needs a genre when you’ve already picked a side?
There’s a funny thing about music: everybody wants you to find your lane until you start driving somewhere they didn’t expect. Then come the labels, the comparisons, the neat little boxes designed to make an artist easier to explain, sell, and forget. Chaka Boy’s “North Division” comes swinging at that whole arrangement, planting its flag in something far less negotiable: the music comes first, and everything else can fall in line.
The third single from A Canadian Werewolf in Alaska, “North Division” carries the attitude of somebody who has heard the industry’s suggestions and decided the committee can keep its opinions. The stated mission is defiant rejection of labels, a commitment to the craft, and loyalty to the people who have been standing in the circle. No chasing a category for the sake of a cleaner pitch. No bending the creative identity to fit somebody else’s filing cabinet.
Just allegiance.
And that word matters here.
