TRIBZ’s “Young Love”: When Rock Legends Remember Sixteen

Some memories never leave the room. They just wait for the right song to bring them back.

There’s a particular kind of heartbreak that doesn’t arrive with tears, slammed doors, or a dramatic goodbye. It shows up decades later, hiding inside an old photograph, a familiar melody, or the memory of somebody you once walked home with every single day. TRIBZ taps into that feeling on “Young Love,” a pop-rock ballad that swaps the band’s broader social commentary for something more intimate: the beautiful, slightly bruised business of remembering who you were before life got complicated.

And the story behind it? That’s where this one gets personal.

For guitarist Earl Johnson, “Young Love” isn’t some carefully manufactured nostalgia trip designed to tug at the heartstrings. It reaches back to Linda, his high school sweetheart, the girl he dated for roughly three years before the road came calling. Their story had all the small, ordinary details that make young romance feel enormous when you’re living it: being introduced through mutual friends, walking to and from school together, and spending Friday nights dancing to Motown on the radio.

No grand production. No elaborate declarations. Just two teenagers and the assumption that tomorrow would look a lot like today.

The song opens with the image of high school sweethearts walking hand in hand, then settles into its central promise: “Young love, thought it would last forever, forever would you be mine.”
