Artist Spotlight: Big O from Atlanta/Birmingham/London

What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My name is Big O, born in ATL, raised in Birmingham, and currently living in London.

What’s the story behind your stage name?
Back in ’07, a friend from China used to always mention how tall and big I was when we stood next to each other. She started calling me “Big O,” and it just stuck.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
It started when I bought 2001 in ‘99. When I heard “The Next Episode” in 2000, it sparked something in me, and I’ve been making music non-stop ever since. My style has kept evolving over the years.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
This year, I was approached by the label Chillhop Guru to work on an EP. I named it I Belong Here because, after over 20 years of making music, I feel like I’m finally getting the recognition I deserve.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
I want people to relax, chill, and enjoy life. Life’s too short to be sad or mad all the time.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Sometimes I get beat block in the middle of creation. When that happens, I listen to instrumental tracks from my favorite producers for inspiration, and that usually gets me back to creating again.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Lupe Fiasco and Ab-Soul. Their storytelling and rhyming are amazing, and it would be a dream to have them both on a track with me.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I’m aiming to win more awards, get on the charts, and gain more recognition with the music I have coming next year.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
I just signed a two-year distribution partnership with Symphonic, so the next step is to perform at more and bigger venues.

We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
Yes, absolutely.

Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
Mostly just blog postings.

Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
You can hear my EP I Belong Here and all my other tracks on Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, YouTube, and Bandcamp. Just type in Big O.

What is the best way to contact you if fans want to give feedback or if other artists/producers want to collaborate?
Instagram—@the.real.bigo.
