What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My name is Jared, and I’m an artist from Long Beach, CA.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
To be so honest, I do not and have never had a stage name that I stood by. I go by my real name because my music is a real reflection of myself—the trials, tribulations, and triumphs that really occurred to me. When I get on the microphone or write a song, it’s never from the perspective of a character.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
Complicated and arduous. I didn’t grow up with any ties to the music industry nor did I have access to gear or recording studios, so the only way I’ve broken through is through sheer effort and will. Music is something you really have to love because it doesn’t pay you, people hardly respect your life choice, and it’s almost always self-funded.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I worked with an engineer I really respect who helped take my mixing skills to the next level. I’m excited about the creative possibilities this new knowledge brings.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
I want to convey that the only way to lose is to quit. I’ve gone through tough times—losing my dad, battling chronic illness, and overcoming addiction—and now that I’m past that, I realize that life can be good, and we always have the choice to move forward.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
I’m introverted and anti-social, which has always been a challenge for me. I’ve overcome this little by little, and it gets easier every day!
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Tame Impala or Tyler, the Creator. They’re both incredible musicians who create unique sonic landscapes, and I aspire to accomplish that one day.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I’ll be releasing my debut, which will allow me to start releasing newer material I’ve already completed.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
The next big step is doing most of my own production and collaborating more.
We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
Yes, absolutely.
Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
I’m looking for as many opportunities as I can find.
