What’s your stage name and where are you from?
My stage name is STOVALIEN, and I’m originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but I now live in Cologne, Germany.

What’s the story behind your stage name?
The name “STOVALIEN” is more than just a creative blend of my last name “Stovall” and the term “Alien.” It represents a deeper connection between identity, creativity, and the idea of being an outsider—someone who doesn’t quite fit the mold. As Gene Stovall, I was always known for my boundary-pushing artistry and eclectic style, embracing the unconventional. The “Alien” in STOVALIEN signifies this sense of otherness, celebrating being different and bringing something fresh and unexpected to the table. It reflects my journey as an artist, constantly pushing the limits of genre and expression. In essence, STOVALIEN is a fusion of individuality and innovation, symbolizing my journey as a creative force unafraid to embrace the unknown.

Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
My musical journey as STOVALIEN has carved out a distinctive path in the underground Alternative Hip-Hop scene, blending a soulful voice with eclectic beats and thought-provoking lyrics. It is marked by relentless experimentation, seamlessly fusing genres, and pushing creative boundaries to create a unique and powerful sound. As a recording artist, singer/songwriter, and music producer, STOVALIEN continues to challenge norms, delivering a raw and authentic sonic experience that resonates deeply with listeners.

Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
In the late hours of a cold winter night, I was locked in my makeshift home studio, wrestling with the concept for “Creature of Habit.” Frustration set in until I stopped trying to control the chaos and embraced it. The track became a reflection of living with a mind that never rests, capturing the raw, imperfect emotions I felt in that moment.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
As STOVALIEN, my music conveys unapologetic authenticity and vulnerability. I aim to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health by sharing my own struggles openly, showing that these issues can be a source of strength and creativity. I encourage individuality, urging listeners to embrace their unique identities and experiences, proving there’s beauty in imperfection and power in staying true to your voice.

Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
One of my biggest challenges was blending Alternative Hip-Hop with deeply experimental soundscapes. After struggling to find cohesion, I let go of rigid structures and began recording raw, unfiltered sounds. By allowing the music to flow organically, I embraced the dissonance, resulting in a track that was innovative and true to my vision.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
I would work with Stevie Wonder because he is the most creative songwriting recording artist I have ever heard. His songs shaped my vocal style and creative mind, and he is my favorite composer.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I see my music pushing the boundaries of Alternative Hip-Hop and Experimental Pop, connecting with a diverse and global audience. I want my music to become a platform for conversations around mental health and collaborate with forward-thinking musicians to challenge the norms and explore uncharted sonic territories.

What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
The next big step is to release a full-length concept album that pushes the boundaries of Alternative Hip-Hop and Experimental Pop. Alongside the album, I plan to launch immersive live performances combining music, visual art, and storytelling, and to collaborate with other artists to expand my creative network.

We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
Absolutely, yes. I appreciate the opportunity!

Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
I am doing a lot of live shows, benefits, jam sessions, and open stages to get my name out. I would love to find a label or manager to help me reach a wider audience.

Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
