What’s your stage name and where are you from?
I’m Pats. I’m originally from Chatham, Ontario, Canada, but currently living in Vancouver, Canada.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
C Pats was my nickname in high school. I wanted something simple that wasn’t difficult to interpret, so I rolled with just Pats.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
A beautiful, life-changing, and crazy ride. I started rapping when I was 17 until about 19, lost it until I was 27, and I’ve been going steady ever since with five albums to my name. Getting back into music truly saved my life, and it’s the best thing to ever happen to me.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
I don’t know how interesting this is, but I love when you’re recording a track (this happened with “sometimes,” my latest single) and you catch a wholesome moment after going off on a verse. You can hear my reaction during the intro of “sometimes,” where I’m clearly excited about what I just laid down on the mic.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
Smell the roses – lead with integrity – be authentic – embrace the journey.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Jub and Marleau, my engineering team, are always very transparent with me in the booth. My voice is naturally very loud/raspy, and I have a tendency to rely on my throat too much when recording. Recording “sometimes,” my latest single, was difficult because I wanted to create something extremely chill, which forced me to hyper-focus on my tone and delivery. Thankfully, we created what I was looking for, and they helped me tap into a vocal chamber I didn’t know that I had.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
Terror Reid because 1) his style is super fresh and 2) he cooks up his own beats, and they’re NASTY. I just love his sound and think it’s great to have in this modern era of hip-hop.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
With this next set of releases I have coming, I think the sky is the limit. It’s wherever I want things to go; I just have to get out of my own way and make the right plays.
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Finding an established producer to build with. That’ll take things to the next level and open doors unimaginable. You have to establish a unique sound in today’s music industry.
We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
For sure.
Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
Just trying to grow the right way and avoid the BS right now.
Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
All streaming platforms. I also have a YouTube channel @yoitspats with a bunch of videos.
What is the best way to contact you if fans want to give feedback or if other artists/producers want to collaborate?
