“People!” – Josh The Author

There’s a surge happening beneath the mainstream. While major platforms chase algorithmic virality, some artists are digging deeper — using their voice to speak not just for themselves, but for communities that have been misrepresented, repackaged, and too often erased. One such voice belongs to Josh The Author, a fiercely articulate and lyrically sharp emcee whose new single “People!” (released July 24 via MUDFLAP REPUBLIC LLC) is both a celebration and a confrontation — delivered in sharp bars and classic boom bap grit.

Born from the intersecting genres of conscious hip-hop, alternative rap, and boom bap, “People!” is Josh’s clarion call: a reminder of who hip-hop really belongs to, and what it was built to do. This is protest poetry over thumping kicks — a defiant beat for Black and Brown voices to walk proud to. And Josh walks that line with purpose.

Though we don’t have a full autobiography on Josh The Author (yet), what’s clear from both his past submissions and current release is that he’s a student of the culture and an uncompromising storyteller. Representing the underground with a pen dipped in urgency, Josh The Author is part of a rising class of lyricists who understand that words are weapons — and he aims with precision.

Previously submitting multiple tracks to Folded Waffle, Josh has shown a consistent dedication to truth-telling, rhythmic craftsmanship, and community-rooted lyricism. “People!” marks his second approved release on our platform, and it cements his name as one to watch among this generation’s disruptors.

“People!” is more than a song — it’s a reclamation. In an era where hip-hop has become the backdrop to TikTok dances and brand commercials, Josh The Author returns it to its rightful place: the streets, the cipher, the pulpit of protest. The beat hits like concrete, laced with dusty snares and vinyl soul — a canvas where his words land like ancestral echoes.

There’s a pulse of James Baldwin in his cadence. A trace of Dead Prez, Mos Def, and Pharoahe Monch in his structure. The hook doesn’t coddle, it calls — and the verses act as cultural audit. He speaks on the way Black creativity gets co-opted, filtered through corporate pipelines, then resold as trend — and how people, the originators, are left out of the picture.

Through this track, Josh subtly interrogates the erasure of Black and Brown contributions in today’s artistic narratives. From fashion to slang to rhythm, he’s pointing out how often mainstream culture lifts the sauce but forgets the chef. The track doesn’t preach — it presses, it pushes, it teaches.

And yet, it’s not bitter. The tone is culturally observant — assertive, yes, but educational. He’s not just calling people out, he’s calling them in. That’s what separates a complaint from a movement. And that’s where the responsibility of expression lands — when you’ve got a platform, your words matter.

Josh uses his verses to spotlight real issues, not as trend-jacking but as sacred duty. In a line where he raps, “We bled to birth it, now they water it down to sell,” you feel the weight of cultural dilution — and the resolve to not let it slide.
