What’s your stage name and where are you from?
Lex Lakaiser, originally from Burlington, North Carolina, now living in Winston-Salem.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Lex came from Lexani rims I loved growing up. When I got into the Army and went to Germany, some hip-hop guys found out my middle name was Lakaiser, and it stuck. So, I became Lex Lakaiser.
Describe your musical journey in three sentences.
My uncles taught me to write and organize songs, and the guys from Nodhead Productions in Germany put me in the game. With that knowledge, I now run my indie label and do things my way. My journey is a marathon, not a race.
Share an interesting experience you had while creating your latest track.
My latest song showed me that I don’t have to finish every song immediately. I took my time, adding bars over days instead of hours, teaching myself patience.
What message do you want to convey through your music?
That no matter where you come from, God is real, and we should be thankful for the small miracles we experience daily. I aim to raise consciousness and help my community grow.
Tell us about a challenge you faced during production and how you overcame it.
Production is not an issue for me. I don’t rap on my own beats, but I rely on producers like Stefan Jäger from Germany, who has supported me for over 20 years.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
All the artists I’d want to work with have passed away.
Where do you see your music taking you in the next year?
I’m not sure, but I live by 2Pac’s quote: “Another album out, that’s what I’m about. More.”
What’s the next big step for you as an artist?
Ushering in a new era of hip-hop that is not so dark and secretive.
We occasionally feature artists on our Bird of Paradise Podcast for in-depth discussions. Would this be something you’re interested in exploring?
Sure, why not.
Are there any other promotional opportunities you’re looking for to boost your visibility?
I’d love more show opportunities. I have great stage presence but limited opportunities.
Where can we hear/watch your most recent work?
YouTube
What is the best way to contact you if fans want to give feedback or if other artists/producers want to collaborate?
